Votes could come next week in the General Assembly on bills that would prevent people with mental illnesses from legally owning firearms. One bill would suspend the state gun owner's ID card of anyone who shows signs of being a danger to themselves or others, as determined by a judge.
Another measure would require local police to revoke the gun permits of anyone who has an order of protection against them.
A third bill would require court clerks to report any person deemed mentally disabled by a judge to the state police so their FOID cards could be revoked.
