Governor Rauner signs college funding bill

Financially strapped public colleges have been given a temporary reprieve as Governor Rauner signed a stopgap funding bill. The six-hundred-million-dollar package includes a percentage of the funds colleges and universities normally get in a year, along with money for the need-based tuition grant program called MAP.

In a statement yesterday, Rauner called the college funding bill a "first step toward compromise" on a complete budget, but he repeated his mantra that a larger deal has to include elements of his pro-business, anti-union reform agenda.
