Illinois State Police report a 25-percent increase in traffic deaths this year compared with 2015, while some areas are seeing even bigger spikes. Statewide, there have been two-hundred-89 fatalities this year compared with
two-hundred-31 for all of last year. In the four northern Illinois counties in State Police District 16, though, there's been a one-hundred-33-percent increase -- from nine deaths last year to 21 so far this year.
Police say drunk driving, speeding and failing to use seatbelts remain the most significant factors in Illinois traffic fatalities.
