In a meeting that lasted over 3 hours last night, area residents were able to voice their opinions on a possible railroad freight line being built in Ogle County. The project would also include Lee, Boone, LaSalle, and Winnebago counties.
Great Lakes Basin Transportation Incorporated plans to file a request with the Surface Transportation Board in Washington and operate 278 miles of rail line. It would extend from LaPorte, Indiana through Illinois to Milton, Wisconsin.
The reason behind the Class 1 railroad would be to bypass the congestion of the Chicago rail network.
Last night's meeting was put together by the Surface Transportation Board. Environmental Protection Specialist David Navecky talked about the next step for the federal organization. He said they willgather information from the company and public before a decision is made.
It will take 2 to 3 years for completion of the environmental statement. Navecky said they have not received too many positive aspects on the project from the 7 public meetings so far. The majority of comments from the public ia against the rail line project.
Concerns from area residents included property values declining, closed rural roads, along with drainage problems in the fields, and the disruption of wildlife. More than 35 people spoke last night and none said they were in favor of the rail line proposal.
Ogle County Farm Bureau President Brian Duncan talked about the concerns of area farmers. He said the number 1 issue is eminent domain. They also need more information on the possible work that will be done.
An estimated 430 people attended the public hearing last night at Rochelle Township High School.
