Cause of death remains unknown for Rochelle man

The exact cause of death for a Rochelle man who became ill in a cell at the DeKalb County jail in Sycamore early Monday morning has yet to be determined.

An autopsy was performed on the body of 28-year old Brandon Washington on Tuesday. He died at Kishwaukee Community Hospital after he was found unresponsive in the jail cell.

Washington was convicted in 2010 of attempted murder for shooting Jason Johnson of DeKalb in May of 2009. He was sentenced to 38 years in prison, but was sent back to the DeKalb County jail by court order last November after filing a post conviction petition. He was scheduled to appear in court yesterday.

DeKalb County authorities say that Washington and another prisoner had consumed homemade alcohol known as "Hooch" prior to his illness. He may also had some drugs in his system.

A toxicology report will be completed before the cause of death will be known.

The investigation continues in the death of Washington by Illinois State Police along with DeKalb County Sheriff's Police and the coroner's office. The Illinois Department of Corrections is also investigating the incident.
