During last night's Rochelle City Council meeting, the police department received a certificate for rail safety week which was held last September.
There are currently 11 rail crossings in Rochelle between the 2 railroads that travel through the community.
The officers were involved in 36 hours of safety procedures near the tracks that week. They also handed out 39 citations for motorists breaking the law.
Rochelle Police Chief Eric Higby said that the department takes safety very seriously around the railroad tracks. He said that the officers patrol around the tracks frequently each day.
The quiet zone project in Rochelle for the railraod crossings should be completed this spring or early summer.
Between 80 to 100 trains travel through Rochelle each day between the Union Pacific and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroads.
