No one suffered any injuries last night following a house fire in Hillcrest.
The flames were noticed at around 8:30 at 226 Jeffrey Avenue at the 1-story home.
Rochelle and Ogle-Lee Fire Chief Dave Sawlsville said there was heavy smoke coming from the front and back doors at the home when crews arrived on the scene. The fire started in the basement as the flames were contained in this area.
The cause of the fire was a space heater at the residence.
It took Rochelle firemen along with departments from Hillcrest and Flagg Center a period of time to clear the smoke out of the house. Cost damage is estimated to be around $12,000.
Sawlsville stressed that people need to be very careful when using a space heater in the cold weather. Items can start on fire very quickly if they are too close to the space heater.
Fire crews were on the scene for nearly 3 hours last night.
