Construction continues in the cold weather for the new Grubsteakers Restaurant in rural Rochelle

Progress may be slow, but construction has begun on the new Grubsteakers Restaurant in rural Rochelle.

The business was destroyed at the intersection of Illinois 251 and Route 64 on April 9th of last year after a E-4 tornado traveled through the area.

12 people were in a crawl space which included workers and customers when the high winds hit the structure. They received only cuts and bruises from the incident.

Owner Ava Mirtoska said that the weather has slowed down construction.

Currently, the foundation has been poured along with wooden frame posts and a partially completed roof.

Ava said that the new Grubsteakers restaurant will look similar to the former building. There will only be a few changes for area residents to enjoy.

The new retaurant will be a little larger than the original building. It will total just over 4,000 square feet. The former restaurant was 3,600 square feet.

It will also be back further from the intersection.

Area residents have raised around $20,000 for the business. Mirtoska believes the total cost to re-open will be between 700 to 800,000 dollars. People can still donated money as an account has been opened at the Holcomb State bank.

Ava said she plans to have a big grand opening in late April or early May. She said people as far as Texas plan to be at the event.

Ava said that the menu will remain the same. She may add on a tornado sandwich for area residents to enjoy.
