Court strikes down hospital tax exemption

A state appellate court has struck down a portion of a 2012 law that allowed hospitals to avoid paying property taxes. The ruling reopens the issue of hospital tax exemptions and leaves five hospitals with pending state applications in limbo.

In Urbana, the ruling means that the Carle Foundation Hospital would have to resume paying more than six-million-dollars in annual property taxes. The hospital is expected to appeal the ruling to the Illinois Supreme Court.
