1948 Ogle County murder case back in the news

The murder of an Oregon woman and Rockford man while on a date in 1948 is back in the news again.

On May 28th, the body of 28-year old Stanley Skridla of Rockford was exhumed from a cemetery. Following the procedure, Ogle County Sheriff's Police submitted to the Illinois State Crime Lab 2 .32 caliber bullets that were recovered in the coffin.

Sheriff's police also gave authorities a .32 caliber handgun which was obtained during the investigation to also be tested at the crime lab.

Ogle County officials say that only 1 of the bullets was suitable for comparison with the handgun. That bullet was not fired from the weapon.

No arrest has ever been made in the murder of Skridla and 17-year old Mary Jane Reed of Oregon. They were killed in June of 1948.

Skridla's body was found the day after the date on County Farm Road, south of Oregon. He was shot 5 times.

Reed's body was located 4 days later in a ditch along Devil's Backbone Road, west of Oregon. She died from a gun shot wound to the head.

In 2005, Ogle County Sheriff's Police reinvestigated the deaths of the 2 area residents. They still believe that all the people involved in their murders are deceased.
