Rochelle gets state grant for road work

Illinois Department of Transportation Secretary Randall Blankenhorn

Illinois Department of Transportation Secretary Randall Blakenhorn brought good news for city officials in Rochelle on Friday.

The city will receive a 1.7 million dollar grant from the Economic Development Program Funds for work in the future on South Main Street.

City Engineer Sam Tesreau said that the work will be between Veterans Parkway and Steam Plant Road. This will include 3 lane sections.

1 of the reasons behind the road work is the future expansion proposal at Rochelle Foods. The 32 million dollar project for Hormel Foods will include a 12,000 square foot addition to their facility along with upgrading their processing lines in the plant.

This will also include the hiring of 118 new jobs for Rochelle Foods.

Tesreau said that the total cost of the project will be 3.5 million dollars. Construction work will begin in either 2017 or 2018.

Transportation Secretary Blankenhorn also talked about another road project in the future for Rochelle. Work would be done on Illinois 251 between Route 38 and the Village of Hillcrest. The highwayt would be widen along with new turn lanes. 

Blankenhorn said that the city also needs better freight connections to the north and south in the future.
