Quiet zone project moving slower than anticipated in Rochelle

Rochelle City Engineer Sam Tesreau

The quiet zone project dealing with the train horn issue in Rochelle has been delayed and will not be completed prior to winter.

Work has been going on over the past several weeks at several of the railroad crossings in the Hub City. The city has 2 railroads that travel through the community. On the average day, between 80 to 100 trains move through Rochelle.

City Engineer Sam Tesreau said that a portion of the project will be completed prior to winter.

He said that Caron Road, 1st Avenue, along with Poplar and Main Streets will be completed prior to winter. Tesreau said that he does not want to have work to begin on a street and then stop the project due to snow and cold temperatures.

He said that the plan still remains 10 railroad crossings and 2 pedestrian areas. A fence will be installed where the 2 pedestrian crossings are currently located.

The work will continue in the spring of 2016.
