Rochelle elementary school district receives $25,000 grant from Monsanto

The Rochelle elementary school district received a grant Friday of $25,000 to help students learn more in the area of agriculture, engineering, along with science, and math.

The money came from the America's Farmers Grow Rural Education program sponsored by the Monsanto Fund.

Rochelle Middle School teacher Vic Worthington had written the grant for the district involving the program. He said that the money will be used throughout the district in the areas of agriculutre, math, science, and engineering.

1 program allows students to follow a crop for 1 year. They plan to track the seeds from planting through harvest, processing, transport, and consumption.

The seeds will be planted in a field where the tornado hit rural Rochelle last April.

Worthington said that it's rare for students in an elementary school district to learned about different areas thanks to the grant money.

This is the 2nd time the Rochelle district has received money from the Monsanto fund to learn more about agriculture. The first check totaled $10,000. Local farmers nominated the school district for both grants.

Worthington is also waiting to see if the district won the $100,000 grant from Farmer's Insurance for the Dream Big Teacher Challenge.

Final results from the online voting will be announced in December. The top 2 school districts in each region receive $100,000 from Farmers Insurance.

Worthington is the only teacher in Illinois on the list of the 15 finalists.
