Mightyvine greenhouse Grand Opening

A Grand Opening ceremony was held Friday at the new Mightyvine greenhouse which is located on the west side of Rochelle, just north of Route 38.

The hydroponic farm is on 7.5 acres and has 30 employees.

The first crops of 2 varieties of tomatoes were planted in August and is being harvested this month. The ripe tomatoes from 20 foot vines will be picked and sent to Chicago restaurants and retailers the same day.

The growing process will continue over a 12 month period in Rochelle.

Mightyvine CEO Gary Lazarski said that the greenhouse is a state of the art facility with 27 foot ceilings. They currently have 2 varieties of tomatoes they grow which will be sold at local stores along with Chicago restaurants and retailers.

Rochelle Mayor Chet Olson said that it's good to have another new company come to the community and this may the future in growing vegetables. He is also glad that local residents will be able to buy the tomatoes in the future.

The city brought fiber out to the area so that the Mightyvine greenhouse facility could be monitored by workers in the Netherlands. The head grower is Dutch and will live in a house built near the facility.

The greenhouse will capture rain and melting snow off its roof and use it to water the tomatoes. They will even have bee hives inside the greenhouse to naturally cross pollinate the plants.

The project was backed by 11 million dollars from more than a dozen individual investors.
