A Princeton veteran recently shared his story of life aboard an aircraft carrier during WWII. 88 year old Gilbert “Gib” Martin was interviewed at Unity Hospice in Rochelle as part of the Veterans History Project, a nationally recognized program. The Library of Congress will preserve this story and others like it for future generations to help them better understand American History and the realities of war.
Martin served in the Navy from October 1944 to June of 1946 aboard the USS Franklin. The ship nicknamed “Big Ben” was bombed on March 19th, 1945, and about 1,000 men died that day. Martin told his story to local media and to Brenda McGarvey, Unity Hospice Director of Program Development.
