Rock Valley College staff ready to strike

The Rock Valley College Faculty Association (RVCFA) has announced after a five-and-a-half hour negotiating session Friday with the Board of Trustees’, the union will go on strike on Wednesday if a deal is not reached.

Union members voted by an overwhelming majority in a membership meeting on August 24th to allow the faculty bargaining team to call a strike if negotiations reach impasse. Since that meeting, the faculty union met with Board representatives four times in sessions that showed little progress.

According to the legal timetable, teachers could have begun its strike on Friday, but the bargaining team did not want to interrupt the Rock Valley College 50th Anniversary Celebration yesterday.

The Board's current financial proposals would cause a significant number of faculty members to see a reduction in total compensation according to the union.

Both sides are set to meet on Tuesday for further negotiations.

The contract for the 160 faculty members expired in June. Salary and the cost of health insurance remain the biggest sticking points in the new deal.
