Ogle County board rejects tobacco licensing ordinance for businesses

In a 13-9 vote last night the Ogle County board rejected an ordinance dealing with tobacco licensing for businesses in the area.

The proposal would involve a yearly $100 fee for businesses who sold cigarettes in Ogle County. The number totaled around 100.

The city of Byron is the only community who currently has a license fee for their businesses.

Ogle County Board Chairman Kim Gouker of Byron said that county officials were against another regulation and mandate for area businesses.

Rochelle, Oregon and Byron do have a compliance program for businesses who sell cigarettes.

The board received an update report on the project at 501 Washington Street in Oregon dealing with the removal of the underground tanks. 6 areas known as "Dirty Dirt" was found and need to be removed with an additional cost of $20,000 for the project.

Demolition work is also expected by the end of the year for the former sheriff's administration building in Oregon. The area will be used as a future parking lot.

Ogle County officials also received word that Orchard Hills withdrew their application with the Illinois EPA.

Gouker said that residents in Davis Junction were against radioactive materials possibly coming into the landfill in the future. He said that the radium was located in LaSalle County at a waste site.

County officials also plan to move forward with a study dealing with a new jail in the future.
