The Rochelle Planning and Zoning Commission recommended to city officials last night that they amend the zoning ordinance dealing with future commercial greenhouses.
Mightyvine is currently building a 7.5 acre facility to grow tomatoes. The greenhouse is located just north of Route 38 as it will have between 20 to 25 employees once they begin operations.
The first crop of 2 varieties of tomatoes is scheduled to be planted on August 1st with harvesting to begin the 1st part of October at the hydroponic farm.
Project "Green" would be part of the change in the ordinance for an Industrial-2 district. No final decisions have been made by company officials if they plan to open the greenhouse in Rochelle in the future.
Additional items for the comprehensive plan for Rochelle may be completed by September. This would include the possible revitalization of the downtown area along with the Brownsfield grant dealing with hazardous materials in Rochelle. The worst corridor is around 2nd Avenue.
