No budget in place to start fiscal year 2016 in Illinois

Illinois lawmakers are beginning the 2016 fiscal year without a budget. The General Assembly couldn't agree on a deal yesterday in order to avoid a possible government shutdown. Governor Rauner told a group of workers at the Illinois Emergency Management Agency yesterday morning that the situation was a "mess" and he hopes the state could fix the problem promptly.

Democrats in Springfield are trying to provide a temporary solution for the budget crisis. They are proposing a two-point-two-billion-dollar one-month budget that would fund select essential services. The measure could be put to a vote today but it is not certain it will be approved by both the Legislature and Governor Rauner.
