2 bullet slugs found in casket involving 1948 murder in Ogle County

Following the exhumed process of a Rockford man from a cemetery this week, 2 bullet slugs and possibly parts of a 3rd were found in the casket of 28-year old Stanley Skridla.

He was killed during a date with 17-year old Mary Jane Reed of Oregon in June of 1948. An arrest has never been made in the murder of the 2 area residents.

Former Oregon Mayor Mike Arians has been assisting family members in trying to determine who killed Reed and Skridla. He said that the slugs are consistent with the murder weapons found during the investigation.

Reed's body was also exhumed in 2005 by Ogle County officials. Sheriff's police have sent the bullet slugs found in Skridla's casket this week to a crime lab for further investigation.

Ogle County Sheriff's Police have said in the past that they believe all of the possible suspects in the case are dead.

Reed and Skridla were both shot to death nearly 67 years ago.
