Enrollment numbers are dropping at Kishwaukee Community College in Malta as they prepare for the fall semester.
School officials are budgeting a 6 percent decline in students, but that figure will most likely be closer to 9 percent. Only half of 3,500 current students have enrolled for fall classes at the college at this time.
With less students, around $250,000 is also expected to be cut from the 23.4 million dollar budget for the next fiscal year.
The cuts are expected to come from capital equipment for Kish.
Less state aid is also a factor in the new fiscal year budget.
There are several reasons for the decline in enrollment. The list includes more students working and fewer individuals from the Chicago area. Many Chicago students attended Kish who had friends taking classes at NIU in DeKalb.
