Restaurant owner recognized for her heroic actions during this month's tornado

Grubsteakers Restaurant owner Ava Mirtoska

A Resolution was approved last night by the Ogle County board in recognition of the life-saving and heroic action of Ava Mirtoska after the tornado hit Grubsteakers Restaurant at Illinois 251 and Route 64 in rural Rochelle this month.

Mirtoska was able to get 12 people in a crawl space who were workers and customers when the tornado struck the restaurant. They received only cuts and bruises from the incident.

Ava says it's hard to believe that this happened to her business. Many times she thinks that this was only a dream and she will wake up.

She also talked about being a hero and would do the same thing if the tornado happens again in the area.

Thursday, May 7th has also been declared Ava Mirtoska day in Ogle Conty.

Ava said that she still plans to rebuild Grubsteakers Restaurant in the future.

She said that the building will be moved a little from the current location once construction begins. She said they will have a big grand opening once the restaurant is completed
