Stillman Valley man arrested following looting incident in Fairdale

DeKalb County Sheriff's Police have arrested a Stillman Valley man following a looting incident that took place in the village of Fairdale.

45-year old Richard Burtch has been charged with 1 count of looting and attempted looting. Bond was set at $50,000.

On April 18th, a resident from Fairdale saw Burtch loading his vehicle with donated items for the victims of the tornado. A deputy spoke with Burtch who then unloaded a stroller and a wheel barrow.

The next day, sheriff's police from both Ogle and DeKalb Counties spoke to him at his home. At the residence, they found 35 brand new tubs still in boxes along with 8 filled with donated items such as medicine and food. Also located at the home were 3 wheel barrows and over a dozen rakes, shovels, and brooms.

Police say that Burtch had initially come to Fairdale to help a family member clean up their home that was destroyed by the tornado. He continued to come back to the village and gather more supplies for himself.

Police say that all of the supplies were collected and returned back to the residents in Fairdale.

Burtch will appear in court on the charges at a later date in Sycamore.
