Rochelle park officials approve 3 million dollars for a new YMCA

In a 5-2 vote last night, park officials in Rochelle approved 3 million dollars for their share in the construction of a YMCA in the Hub City. The facility would be located off 20th Street, just north of Flagg Road.

The park district would use general obligation debt certificates to pay for the work over a 15 year period. The yearly cost would be $267,425. That would be 1/3 of the capital money used for a fiscal year involving projects in the park district.

Park board President Roger Bunger said it was a tough decision to make. He said that he heard from area residents who were in favor and those against the project.

Bunger said that if the YMCA is built, the park district will be able to work with them on programs in the future for area residents to enjoy.

Voting against the proposal were Commissioners Christa Seebach and Bud Norcross. Both felt that the board needed additional information before a final decision was made. Seebach also wanted the issue placed on the ballot as a referendum item next March for area residents to voice their opinion.

Norcross was not in favor of the location off 20th Street for the facility. The 10 acres of land is being donated by a local developer for the YMCA.

Over 60 people attended last night's meeting at City Hall.

YMCA committee member Dan Lundquist knows they have only half of the votes they need for the project. He's happy that park officials moved forward with the YMCA proposal.

The Rochelle City Council may vote on their portion of the 3 million dollars next Monday night.

The 30,000 square foot 2-story YMCA would have a gymnasium, a walking track, along with a fitness area and community meeting rooms. It would be managed by the Kish Family YMCA in DeKalb.

Park officials also approved a new mower to cut grass which totals just under $69,000 along with a new dock for Lake Sule and a shelter for Powers Park in Hillcrest. Workers cut around 250 acres of grass.

The Tort Liability insurance for the park district will also not exceed just over $70,000.
