Thirty-nine-percent of the people living in rural parts of Illinois don't have access to high-speed Internet service. Data recently released from the Federal Communications also show that among the state's urban dwellers, only one-percent lack high-speed web access. In addition, many rural areas and smaller towns have no backup systems, leaving them vulnerable to inconvenience and possible danger. In the event Internet access is interrupted, stores couldn't process credit cards, ATMs wouldn't work and in some areas, 911 emergency service could be lost.
