Byron School Board cuts 6 teachers for the next fiscal year

Byron School officials cut 6 teaching positions earlier this week due to decling enrollment numbers along with a reduction in the amount of money they receive from the Exelon nuclear plant in property taxes. The value of the facility declined by 27 million dollars.

In a press release, the board also blamed "excessive" costs for teacher salaries along with benefits were reasons for the reduction in staff.

Reports indicate that the Education Fund in the Byron School District has seen a deficit in 5 of the last 6 years and employee health insurance costs are projected to rise by 30 percent.

Since 2003, the district's enrollment has dropped by 275 students. Since 2009, the employment costs have increased by 4 million dollars due to hiring of staff and retirement benefits.

Out of the 6 teachers cuts this week, 3 were positions at the high school.

The average teacher's salary in the Byron School District is just over $69,000 with benefits. They have 132 teachers in the district.

Due to the financial problems, the Byron School District also plans to reduce legal fees, cost controls on all accounts, and purchasing areas have been reduced.

School officials will also continue to search for ways to cut costs without impacting student achievement in the district.
