Rochelle Council and park board approve agreement involving possible YMCA

The Rochelle City Council along with park officials approved an intergovernmental agreement last night dealing with the possibility of a YMCA being built in the Hub City.

The vote was 6-1 in favor of the proposal by the council. Dan McDermott voted against the motion.

The park board voted 5-1 in favor of the agreement. Park Commissioner Christa Seebach voted against the proposal while BJ Carmichael was absent from the special meeting for the park board.

Rochelle Mayor Chet Olson and Flagg-Rochelle Community Park District President Roger Bunger said that no financial commitments were approved last night for the YMCA. There was also some talk about an advisory referendum on the issue to let area resident voice their opinions.

The YMCA would have 2 floors which will include a gymnasium, a wellness area, and a walking track. The city and the park district have been asked to donate 3 million dollars each for the construction of the building.

1 of the organizers of the project in Rochelle is Dan Lundquist. He knows that a future swimming pool would be big for the facility.

The building would also be associated with the Kishwaukee YMCA in DeKalb.

Olson said that the community needs to support the project for it to work.

No time table has been set on any final decisions from the city or park district on the project.
