Residents in Rochelle may see the construction of a new YMCA in the fall of next year.
The 6 million dollar building would be 31,000 square feet on about 5 acres of land. The tentative location would be near the intersection of 20th Street and Hub Drive between Rochelle Township High School and Lincoln School.
The facility would have 2 floors. The 1st floor would have a gym which would be around 10,000 square feet along with an exercise area, a daycare and community room and locker rooms. The 2nd floor will have a 3 lane walking track along with a wellness and fitness area.
1 of the organizers of the YMCA is Dan Lundquist. He said that the facility would be for current and future residents in the Rochelle area. He said that it would also have room for expansion if they wanted to build a swimming pool in the future.
The initial membership is expected to be around 750 people. The project would also need the approval of the Kishwaukee YMCA in Dekalb.
No tax money is scheduled to be used to build or operate the YMCA. The city could use money from the landfill to help construct the facility. Other taxing bodies along with businesses and local residents are expected to pay for the facility and day to day operations.
Rochelle Community Hospital has also been contacted about the project.
If construction begins next fall, the YMCA is expected to be open in late summer of 2016.
