Road salt problems for area road and street departments this winter

State, County, and local road and street departments are preparing for the winter weather in the near future.

Plows are being put back on trucks along with salt and sand deliveries.

1 problem that could face many counties and villages this year in Illinois is the lack of road salt for the winter months. During this week's program "Let The People Know", Ogle County Engineer Curtis Cook from the Highway Department talked about the issue. He said the county saw an increase of only 5 percent from a year ago. He said some cities and villages will pay double from what they were billed last winter.

Why the lack and high costs for road salt this year? Cook said that there was a shortage of road salt at the end of last winter and companies have not caught up with this year's demand.

Cook said that Ogle County will be able to get additional road salt if there is bad winter for 2015.

Rochelle Street Superintendent Tim Isley also said that their road salt supply is good right now for the winter months. He did say that the cost was nearly double than what the city paid last year.

"Let The People Know" is heard on Wednesday afternoons at 12:30 on Newstalk 1060 and rebroadcast Saturday mornings at 6 on Newstalk 1060 and Sunday mornings at 6 on "The Coyote".

Next week's guest will be Rochelle Mayor Chet Olson.
