Residents in the Meridian School District will be going to the polls Tuesday to decide on a referendum dealing with a 7-year tax increase.
The proposal involves a 70 cent increase in the Education Fund. A residents with a home valued at $100,000 will see their tax bill go up $191 a year.
The average property owner in the district will pay 8 to 9 percent more each year.
Signs have been placed in the communities in the Meridian School District that say "Vote Yes for Kids".
Reasons for the lack of funding for the district include a decline in state aid, an 11 percent drop in property values, fewer students, and repay 2 million dollars that was collected in property taxes in 2003 dealing with the landfill in Davis Junction.
The Meridian School District has a budget this year of 16.3 million dollars. 30 employees have been layed off during the past 2 years.
Additional cuts are expected if the referendum fails on Tuesday. That could mean high school sports and other activities.
