Rochelle police are currently investigating at least 8 instances during the past week of preloaded money card scams.
Authorities say that an individual or individuals shoplifted visa gift cards within the past 2 to 3 weeks. They then uploaded stolen legitimate credit card account information onto these stolen gift cards. This includes their value which could range from $25 to $100.
Police say that several of the different cards are often used until 1 is accepted.
A black male and female went to numerous businesses last week in Rochelle trying to use the altered credit cards. The purchases included cigarettes and additional gift cards which involved several hundred dollars.
There is also another black male subject that may be involved in the scam.
Similiar incidents have taken place in DeKalb and Sycamore at businesses.
Rochelle police are encouraging all retail businesses to maintain their employee safety and check each credit card used. If they believe a scam is taking place, they should contact Rochelle police right away.
Area residents should also keep track of their credit card activity and look for small charges they did not make.
