Demographics meeting last night in Rochelle dealing with the school districts

Superintendents Jamie Craven and Todd Prusator

The Rochelle League of Women Voters held a presentation last night dealing with the changes in demographics involving the 2 school districts in the Hub City.

The guest speakers were Superintendents Todd Prusator from the Elementary District and Jamie Craven from RTHS.

The 2 key issues both districts are faced with is the increasing number of hispanic students along with low income families. 31% of the student enrollment in the elementary district is hispanic with 62% from low income families.

RTHS has 30% of low income families while 29% of the students are hispanic.

It was mentioned last night that it takes 5 to 7 years for a student to handle language skills from Spanish to English. Spanish is also spoken in 19 percent of families at home who have students attending RTHS.

Elementary SuperintendentTodd Prusator believes that the district has programs to help students in the classroom.

RTHS Superintendent Jamie Craven said that both school districts need to continue to make changes in the future so that students can excel in the classroom.

Over 30 people attended last night's meeting at RTHS.
