Ashton Police Chief Darrell Farringer was pronounced dead yesterday evening at KSB Hospital in Dixon.
Lee County Sheriff's Police report that they responded to a car in a field at around 5pm on Route 52 and Route 30.
When they got to the location, they found Farringer unresponsive in the car. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Police say that the vehicle going off the roadway and into the field does not appear to have contributed to Farringer's death. It may have been a medical problem. An autopsy is scheduled on the body today.
Farringer was 52 years old and lived in Amboy. He has been chief of police in Ashton since September of 2012.
Farringer was in the Marines for 20 years and worked for the Savannah Police Department in Georgia for 10 years prior to taking the job in Ashton. He graduated from Amboy High School in 1980.
