Technology Instructor Vic Worthington and Monsanto Representative Kevin Sanderson
During an assembly this afternoon at the Rochelle Middle School, it was announced that the district will received a $10,000 grant from the Monsanto fund under their "Full Steam Ahead" program.
Rochelle is 1 of 14 schools in Illinois to received this grant money. It's the 1st time for the district.
Technology instructor Vic Worthington was behind the grant process. He said that the students will use their reading, writing and math skills for such things at soil testing. retail agriculture, and fish farming.
The grant will be used to purchae equipment such as a growing table, a fish tank, along with audio broadcast items.
Monsanto has given out 7 million dollars since 2011 in this program. The total is expected to reach over 13 million dollars by 2015.
Worthington also said that 16 area farmers nominated the school district for the Monsanto grant. Many were present at the assembly today
Worthington said that they plan to work with Maplehurst Farms in the future for soil testing involving the students along with talking with area farmers when they work in their fields.
