Referendum in November for Hillcrest voters involving sales tax figure

Voters in Hillcrest will decide November 4th during the General Election if they want to raise the sales tax figure. Village officials approved a referendum on the ballot tonight to increase the sales tax from 6.25% to 6.75%.

Board President Kim Whalen said that they are looking for additional revenue in the future. The money will be used to payoff the sanitary sewer loan. The village expects to receive around $30,000 a year.

The 2013-14 supplemental appropriation was approved last night which totals $682,163, an increase of $105,000 from a year ago. The higher number was due to the solar panels project, road work in the village, and snow removal costs this past winter.

The new fiscal year budget will be approved during the September meeting as it totals $597,321, an increase of around $20,000 from a year ago.

Village officials approved a resolution in support of PharmaCannis, a cultivating medical cannabis facility based in Chicago. The building would be located at the corner of Twombly and Dement Roads and should be between 30 to 35,000 square feet.

The project still needs to be approved by the state. Police Chief Danny White said that there will be high security around the facility if built in Hillcrest.

The board approved an amendment to the ordinance in the maximum amount of money a village official can spend on a project. It was lowered to $500. The figure had been $1,500.

The village is also looking at changes in the truck route and increasing the weight limits from 8 tons. The truck route would include Scott and Maple Avenues, River Road, and Maple Court. Wayne Road would be eliminated from the route.

Hillcrest officials met in executive session to talk about pending litigation of the future property involving Regional Ready Mix near the intersection of Illinois 251 North and Lind Road. A representative from Julep Arbor Farms still needs to sign off on the changes made in the annexation agreement. No action was taken by the board tonight.
