Train horn issue remains a problem in Rochelle

It may be moving slow, but progress is still being made dealing with the "quiet zone" issue in Rochelle when it comes to train horns.

Between 80 to 100 trains use the 2 railroads on the average day in the Hub City between the Union Pacific and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroads. There are 11 crossings in Rochelle.

Gredco Director Jason Anderson said that about 60 percent of the costs have been determined so far as the engineer on the project has looked at all of the railroad crossings. He said the final numbers should be completed in August.

Anderson believes some work will be done this year, but the majority of the project in 2015.

The city remains in negotiations with Ryder dealing with the lead track agreement. The contract terminates on October 1st.

As first reported earlier this spring, the city plans to extend the industrial rail. The annual volume right now is 3,800 cars. That figure is expected to increase to 14 to 18 thousand cars during a 12 month period.

1 reason for the increase is the company Coated Sand Solutions.

New storage fees and regulations begin on August 1st in Rochelle dealing with train traffic.
