Illinois farmers could use a break from rain

Illinois has no areas in drought for the first time since last August, but for many farmers, the rains are a little too much of a good thing. The rains of the past few weeks have helped with soil moisture and the flow of streams, but they've also put Spring planting on hold. The average precipitation for the past week was nearly fifty-percent above normal, and nearly 20-percent of the state's topsoil is rated as saturated. The 30-day forecast calls for above-normal rain and below-normal temperatures, the same conditions that delayed planting last spring.
