Anyone with a debit card may want to keep a close watch on their bank account. Attorney General Lisa Madigan is warning people about an ATM scam. Hackers are apparently getting around the controls at ATMs and making unauthorized withdrawals from people's accounts. The scam often starts with "phishing" attacks targeting bank employees. The scammers send phony but official-looking emails that include links to initiate a malware attack on the banks' systems, allowing them to obtain employee login information. Then they create fake bank cards with the login information and make several withdrawals from the same account, usually on holidays and weekends. So far the scammers have made off with more than 40-million dollars.
