Officials from Exelon have filed a tax appeal dealing with the assessment of their nuclear power plant in Byron.
Exelon believes that the plant is valued at 253 million dollars instead of the 509 million dollars set by Ogle County Supervisor of Assessments Jim Harrison.
The appeal is for 2013 assessments which affects taxes payable in 2014.
Exelon has applied for a 20-year extension to its current licenses which comes to an end in 2025 and 2027.
The Ogle County Board of Review is expected to hear the case in January.
Exelon appealed last year's assessment. The board of review upheld the value set by Harrison. Exelon appealed that decision to the Illinois Property Tax Appeal Board who has yet to make a decision.
The company paid more than 32 million dollars in real estate taxes this year to 11 taxing bodies.
A 4-year agreement between Exelon and the taxiing bodies for the plant's assessment in Byron expired in 2011.
Exelon's 1st reactor began producing electricity in 1985 while the 2nd unit went on line in 1987.
